Tatarica-Research in Germany: New sources and facts.
Addition to or new-interpretation of German-Tatar History?
Abstract:
In order to break down common stereotypes of Tatars in German language speaking areas I did surveys not only in contemporary literature, but I also did researches in Archives in the capital of Germany as well as in regional archives in landscapes of northern and eastern Germany. On one hand there I came across to different materials: Short stories from Napoleon War times, where thousands of cantoned Tatars stayed in Germany; Tatar documents of the World War I. (Russian Muslim Assembly, anti-bolshevist letters of Tatar Activists to German Secret Service) or documents about dozens of 'Tatar' toponyms in Prussia and lower Saxony. Another relatively unknown part of the past is the service of Tatar elite-soldiers in the Prussian and Saxonian military forces (around 2000 soldiers up to 1780s). On the other hand one can ascertain different designs and images in school text books of the past, which dealt for instance with the categorization of Turcic people. There were – contrary to the contemporary Turkology – the Turks a part of Tatar people not vice versa…
I want to give an overview about new sources and the possibilities of using them in the context of deconstructing stereotypes via discovering the history of Tatar-German relationship.
